She was spent; spent, yet she felt so oddly alive. Annie sat through the church service, mesmerized by Josiah’s voice as he told the story about the prodigal son then led the congregation in one last hymn before he said the final prayer of the morning. He didn’t have much time to speak with her afterwards, as everyone wanted some sort of attention from him and stood in line to get it. Josiah King wasn’t sought after because he was something special, but because he was their spiritual leader and a wise one at that. Annie remembered some of the profound things he would say back when he worked for her pa. It would astound her father and he often talked with Josiah for hours after supper.
“We best go change then head on out to the Triple C,” Grandma said as she stepped outside the church doors. “Don’t you worry none, child. Josiah will be ready to go when it’s time.”
“Time?” Annie began. “Is he driving out with us?”
“Yes; no sense him saddling up a horse when he don’t need to. Besides, it’s always safer with two menfolk to take along! I know those Cooke boys and Mr. Berg ran that nasty Thaddeus Slade out of town for what he did to you after you arrived, but a body can’t be too careful. Who knows if that stinking varmint isn’t sneaking around out on the prairie somewhere?”
Annie shuddered. She remembered him, remembered how he jumped up into the wagon she was in and tried to kiss her. But it was also quite obvious that he’d wanted to do a lot more than that. If Mr. Berg hadn’t come along and pulled him out of the wagon, Heaven knows what Slade would have tried to do to her, and in broad daylight, too!
“Did he try to hurt Sadie?” Annie asked. “I thought I heard the Cookes talking about it when they … ah … subdued that Mr. Slade.”
“Ha! Yep, he done tried to kiss Sadie in the saloon when she and Belle were helping Irene fix up some pies in the kitchen. Sadie was gonna come down to our place to return a pan. Irene done set it on the stove, thinking she was gonna use it, but then decided not to. Sadie, she took a towel, picked it up, and headed out with it. Guess what she did with that hot frying pan when Slade grabbed her?”
Annie grimaced.
Grandma laughed. “Slade looked like someone hit him with a hot iron! He steered clear of Sadie after that, let me tell you! He’d been lying pretty low until you came to town.”
“Where do you think he went?” Annie asked as they walked back to the house.
“Heard tell he was from someplace back east. Maybe he went there or maybe he went to Oregon City, who knows? As long as he’s out of Clear Creek, that’s what matters.”
Annie glanced nervously about for a moment then calmed herself. She had to stop worrying so!
